"Religion can play a significant role in promoting the understanding of sexuality as an affirming expression of equality, mutual respect, caring and love," according to the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS) in the Religion, Spirituality, and Sexuality Report, (February/March, 2000).
United Way of Greater Milwaukee (UWGM)'s Faith Community Committee, comprised of representatives from many faiths, is working towards increasing the dialogue & capacity among religious institutions to directly impact the issue of teen pregnancy.
Research shows that youth religiosity & involvement in church, is a protective factor against both early sexual behavior and pregnancy; our goal is to make this link clear & gain buy-in from faith leaders so that they will incorporate prevention messages in their dialogue.
In June 2010 UWGM sponsored additional opportunities for adult faith leaders to become trained to facilitate "Keeping it Real,” a faith-based pregnancy prevention curriculum. In September 2011, we held another facilitator training. To date, 35 community adults representing 10 churches have been trained as facilitators.
